Alpha 129: Working with Science. Introduction by Louise Thomas.
A science career is more than a job; it is a way of life. By working in a science-related profession you are committing yourself to a lifetime of personal achievement and directly contributing to, at the very least, the prosperity of your country and, at most, the benefit of man-kind. All scientists contribute to the world's wealth of knowledge. Science careers include all fields of science, engineering and medical science. Traditional science at secondary school is usually taught as biology, physics and chemistry. However, at tertiary level and in the work force, the lines have become increasingly blurred as more and more people specialise in interdisciplinary science such as biophysics, biochemistry, geophysics and geochemistry.

Battery electric vehicles (455 kb)
Fuel prices are fluctuating. Motorists continue to feel the pain, with no prospect of respite. People so value the advantages of easy mobility that attempts to get them out of their cars are usually not very successful. However, oil is not only getting more expensive but it is also running out (not to mention its effect on global climate change), so the era of individual car travel must be coming to an end; or will alternatives become available?
Energy (204 Kb)
It is becoming harder to obtain some energy sources, forcing up prices. Because of these issues, New Zealand will need to find new sources of energy, and it will need to make better use of its existing ones. This Gamma will talk about fossil fuel, hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass energy sources and biofuels for transport. It will also cover emerging and future technologies, such as wave and tidal energy, and hydrogen fuel cells.
