Level 2 Course and Awards

Moderation shall be as required by NZQA and the school's own internal policies

Skills AS Science 2.1 (90312)- Carry out a practical scientific investigation with supervision 4  
AS Science 2.2 (90771) - Research information to present a scientific report 3  
US 21610 - Collect, and use computer technology to store and process, numeric data for a scientific purpose 4  
AND  
Suggested US 6312 - Investigate factors that affect a living process
or
US 8929 - Identify biological population patterns through investigation

US 6362 - Demonstrate an understanding of fossils 3  
or
US 6360 - Identify geological features from recorded visual information

US 6332 - Appreciate how groups of related chemical substances meet the needs of society 3  
or
6339 - Prepare or isolate consumer products and compare their properties to a commercial equivalent

8771 - Describe the use and functioning of rockets, satellites and space probes 3  
OR  
Other Any Level 2 standards from any Science (including AgHort, Biology, Chemistry, Physics) 10-12  
TOTAL   21-23 credits  
       

The course consists of level 2 standards (10-12 credits) chosen from any Science (including Agriculture and Horticulture, Biology, Chemistry, Physics). These standards provide context for the "skills" standards (11 credits). These standards are noted in the table and must be included in the course.

The suggested course outlined above contains standards which have an emphasis on practical science.

Resources* provided for the suggested course allow the skills standards to be integrated into a context-based course. Evidence for achievement of these standards can be gathered by traditional types of assessment or by use of portfolios developed during the time of the course.

*These resources are being developed during 2007.

Guidelines for Level 2 Certificate in Science

Gold: 15 credits, including two "skills" standards
Silver: 12 credits, including one "skills" standard
Bronze: 9 credits

All credits are NZQA Level 2
