About ASTA
ASTA was established in 1944 ‘to discuss questions relating to the teaching of Science”.
During the early days it held general meetings once a term. It was heavily involved in curriculum development and a major event which continued right up until just before the establishment of NCEA was the annual critique of exam papers which in the early days involved sometimes terse communications with the then Auckland University College. It was also in communication with the British Science Masters Association and the Australian Science Teachers Association and swapping of Journals. It was the initial force behind the Annual Auckland Science fair
Currently ASTA’s role is to further the interests of science education in all its aspects in the Auckland
Region and support affiliated activities which could include but is not limited to, subject support groups,
science Fairs, BP Technology Challenge, Year 10 science Quiz and Science Conferences
ASTA continues to be involved in curriculum development.
